Let’s be real—there’s no shortage of resources in VBCPS, but how do we move beyond just having them to really using them in ways that save time and boost impact? This hands-on session explores high-impact, low-prep strategies that leverage the tools we already have, like Formative Assessment Prompts, Vocabulary Resources, Image Floods, and more, through the lens of formative assessment, family communication, and instructional clarity. You’ll leave with a digital strategy bank, ready-to-use templates, and practical tools that make teaching smarter, not harder.
Science learning doesn’t stop when students leave the classroom, and when families are engaged in meaningful, accessible ways, it creates powerful opportunities for lasting impact. In this interactive session, participants will explore how to build bridges between classroom science instruction and family engagement that strengthens student understanding, curiosity, and confidence. Through hands-on activities, real examples, and ready-to-use take-home tools, educators will learn how to integrate science content with engaging family-friendly strategies that align with the Virginia Science Standards of Learning (SOLs). Participants will walk away with easy-to-implement ideas for science nights, at-home exploration tools, and collaborative projects that promote science talk, literacy, and critical thinking beyond the school walls.
Unlock the power of Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) to enhance science instruction for K–5 learners. This session will explore how VTS promotes access to science by using images, diagrams, and models to build conceptual understanding and support vocabulary development. Participants will discover how visual tools can strengthen observation skills, deepen content knowledge, and foster academic language, creating pathways for all students, including English language learners and those with varying needs, to become confident, future-ready scientists.
