Essential: Beyond Biology Facts: Building Understanding Through Scientific Practices (for High School Biology Teachers)
Tuesday August 5, 2025 9:00am - 10:30am EDT
Tired of students memorizing biology terms but struggling to explain the processes behind them? This interactive session for Biology teachers focuses on moving beyond fact recall by embedding scientific practices such as inquiry, data analysis, modeling, and argumentation into instruction. Aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, the session includes components of exemplar lessons that foster deep, phenomenon-based understanding of biology concepts. Walk away with ready-to-use strategies, practical tools, and a renewed approach to teaching biology for meaning and mastery—not just memorization. Whether you’re new to these practices or looking to refine them, this session will re-energize your teaching. *Note: Participants should bring their school issued computer to the session.
